The same old Twitter marketing techniques tell us to:
Engage with your followers;
Use hashtags;
Tweet on Sunday afternoon;
And a host of others tips and tricks.
But what about using Twitter to drive real visitors to your website?
Now, those tips might help you add a couple more Twitter followers, but there will certainly be no significant impact that will really help your blog traffic take off.
If you’re anything like me, you like traffic to your blog or website 1000% more than growing a few more Twitter followers.
I’m going to skip past those same lame Twitter marketing tips and show you one technique that will send a ton of traffic to your blog.
Ready?
Here goes…
Mari Smith (often referred to as the Queen of Facebook) has a twitter following of over 500,000 raving fans and a single tweet from her could do wonders to any blogger.
Even though I didn’t have any connection with Mari, I sent Mari a cold email.
3 days later, she tweeted one of my blog posts.
Her tweet immediately skyrocketed my blog traffic.

Here was what I did:
Step 1: Study Mari’s Twitter Profile
I spent time researching Mari’s twitter profile.
I studied the tweets she posted over the years and saw she had tweeted this page she found on the Entreprenuer.com.
It’s an article list (listicle) of 14 free stock photo websites.
Step 2: Make a “better” version
The article was created back in October 2014 and some of the resources were outdated.
I spent a couple hours doing research then curated the latest high quality websites to make a better version of the old article she tweeted.
Here is my blog post of 18 free stock photo web sites.
Step 3: Reach out to Mari
I headed over to Mari’s website, found her email address.
I then sent her this simple email:
In less than 24 hours, Jessica, her business relationship manager, answered my email:
This is what I sent Jessica:
3 days later, Mari tweeted this:

Boom!
My blog traffic skyrocketed within a few hours!
And the shock-wave kept going for a whole week.
Conclusion
Getting an influencer to tweet your article isn’t as hard as many think, you just have to do it right.
To recap, here is my “right” process:
Step 1: Locate content an influencer has tweeted.
Step 2: Make the content better… update it, make it longer, add more value to it, whatever. Your goal is to make your new article a better version of the old article.
Step 3: Reach out to the influencer, ask permission to send your upgraded content. When he or she replies, send over your link and make it easy for them to share.
That’s it!

My goodness, Verena. I had no idea that getting the attention of someone with a huge following could be that easy. I mean, I wouldn’t have even known the courtesy requirements without your post. Polite is a no-brainer, but exactly how would have been by guess and by golly. THANKS FOR ANOTHER TERRIFIC POST! Now that I know how to do this, it’s not so scary. 🙂
Glad to hear I caused a stir, Annie. That’s true: getting the attention of someone with a huge following isn’t as hard as many think, we just have to do it right.
Super coool… getting influencers to share your stuff is priceless 🙂
Thanks, Ali. This is a great way to drive real visitors to your own blog; not just Twitter followers. Let me know if you have any questions about the process.
Now this is the type of information that’s seriously valuable…
REAL CONTENT…thanks
Thanks, Nile. I aim to please.
Thanks Verena! Nice “trick”!
Glad you like the post, Lee.
Thanks extremely handy. Will share website with my friends.
Sounds great Ben!
Hi Verena,
Great piece of advice. Shared it on Twitter.
BTW. I get more than 1k traffic from Twitter a month by using “lame” Twitter tactics 😉
Must not be that lame 😉
So glad it’s been of use to you and thanks for the share, Raul.
I read your Twitter technique. Very smart, love it! A few hacks really makes a difference in social media promotion.
It sure does. I also found out that the topic itself makes a huge difference. For instance: my topic: “How to get 500+ retweets” got less engagement but a lot more traffic than for instance “[Infographic] 101 Growth Marketers tips”
I think Twitter Marketing related topics perform well organically on Twitter.
It’s just a hypothesis. Not entirely sure.
Hi Verena!
Great tips and insight you are sharing here!
That is very clever. Way to go!
I think that is a big myth in the blogging community – thinking that it is “hard” to get a big influencer to share your content. You are showing that it is easier than most would think.
Thank you very much for sharing this. I really like your new blog here. Just subscribed to your list.
Keep up the great work!
Excellent, Freddy. Glad to hear it.
Hey that’s really good way to boom on twitter. Really, you are too smart!
Thank you for the great share and you know what? I successfully used the same technique with my first blog. That’s why I would say it’s a technique that really works because it’s already worked for me.. Thanks.
Excellent, Akshay. That’s awesome.
Hi Verena
Looks like Who You Know + What You Know helps make a difference. Congrats on making the right move!
😉
Hi Verena, this is solid info & I have been reading about this content upgrade thing for quite some time.
One of the major difficulties I often have is finding the right influencer for a certain niche. Is there any tips for this?
I Google them up 😉
