20 Days ago, after publishing this blog post on GrowthText, I sent an email to my list subscribers announcing the post.
I logged in to my Aweber account a few days later and saw my email had a 22.1% open rate:
As you can see from the screen capture above, I have 4000+ subscribers.
A 22.16% open rates means that 900+ people out of 4,241 subscribers opened my email.
In our industry, 22.1% isn’t too bad.
But it’s not something to brag about either.
I wasn’t happy.
I wanted more people to read that email.
How I doubled my email open rate
Here is what I did…
I waited 10 days.
10 days later, I logged in to my Aweber account again.
I took the same email I sent and changed the subject line to something new:
As you can see, the old subject line was “How to drive 1000+ visitors from Reddit”
I changed it to “Reddit Traffic Hacks”.
The email body text remained the same.
Didn’t change a single word.
Then I sent it only to the subscribers who did not open my previous email.
Here is the point…
Just because our email isn’t opened the first time doesn’t mean people aren’t interested in what we have to say.
People may be travelling, on vacation, having an overload day, or the email may have landed in the spam folder.
It could also be because we sent it at the wrong time of the day.
They didn’t open their inbox, and our email got buried in the pile and wasn’t noticed until the next house cleaning.
As we know, most people receive far more email than they can read in a day.
Just by resending the same email to your list, in this case, using a new headline, you get a second chance to reach your subscribers and get read.
It took me less than a minute to change a subject line and hit the “send” button in my Aweber account.
The result?
Another 13.9% subscribers opened my email:
Just by changing the subject line and emailing the same message to non-openers, I increase my email open rate from 22.1% to 36%
1 minute work = 2X email open rate (almost).
Not bad ya 😉
Try this simple tweak the next time you send out an email.
It will immediately boost your open rate and drive more traffic to your blog post or sales message.

Im curious if that uptick in open rate lead to an increase in CTR or conversions?
Most of the time, I get lower clickthrough rate (link click within the email) in my second emails.
The subscribers who only open our second email are usually less engaged, otherwise they would have opened our first email.
Charles, getting a lower link click rate in my second emails is an anticipated result. No complaint there as I still get more people to read my content – which wouldn’t happen without sending out a second email series – and raising the reader rate leads to an increase in sales over time.
